FIU Panther Promenade & Quad

Florida International University (FIU) Panther Promenade & Quad

Landscape Architecture

In conjunction with the design of the Tamiami residence hall at Florida International University (FIU) the University desired to establish a promenade adjacent to the student housing to link other student housing facilities and parking facilities to the FIU football stadium. The design intent was to have a promenade that would be the focus of pregame tailgating and celebrations.

Working with design architect Perkins + Will, Miller Legg served as the landscape architect of record in the development of the unique campus open space. The Promenade integrated existing mature oak trees to provide instant shade and canopy while embracing two open water bodies to the north. In addition to the promenade procession route, intimate outdoor seating areas for student contemplation, collaboration and socializing were also integrated into the design. The Promenade’s vibrant hardscape design responded to the need for the Promenade to also serve as the fire route for the adjacent Tamiami Hall. Close coordination with the State Fire Marshall as well as FIU was required to ensure that the Promenade was a suitable gathering destination for pregame festivities while safety concerns were adequately addressed. The Promenade project is a reference for this Contract as it demonstrates Miller Legg’s capability to develop unique and complex hardscape designs, collaborating with the end user and multiple University departments including facilities, athletics, student life and recreation; to develop a holistic design that not only serves as a campus destination but also is a multi-purpose use space enjoyed throughout the scholastic year.

All Services

Miller Legg provided civil engineering and landscape architecture design documentation, implementation, permitting and construction phase services for the design of a Promenade and Plaza associated with the FIU Tamiami Hall Project, a new housing complex on the south end of the Modesto Maidique campus adjacent to Tamiami Park. The intent was to create a convenient interactive space for student life and gatherings adjacent to the FIU Ricardo Silva stadium. The project involved the relocation of a major road on campus, design of a portion of Panther Promenade on the north side of the Parkview Housing building, included a plaza and pedestrian crossing and incorporates sidewalks and lakes. Civil and utility infrastructure improvement design included demolition/clearing, irrigation, paving, grading and storm drainage system. Landscape architecture scope included a tree/palm inventory, relocation, hardscape and planting design, and construction observation. The project was designed and built to a expedited schedule to meet future campus semester activity needs.

In June, 2024, the FIU Panther Promenade & Quad was honored with the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Florida Award of Excellence and the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Florida Award of Environmental Sustainability!
